doula

The major role of a birth doula is to support the laboring woman both physically and emotionally during her labor and childbirth experience so that she feels respected, empowered and capable.

The major role of the postpartum doula is to help the family make a smooth adjustment to life with a new baby by educating and supporting the new parents in such a way that they feel empowered to care for their newborn with confidence.

The services I provide as a postpartum doula include, but are not limited to: infant care while mother rests; educating the new family in baby care and feeding methods following the pediatrician’s guidelines or that of the American Academy of Pediatrics; light housekeeping; baby laundry; escorting mother and baby to follow-up appointments; teaching calming/soothing techniques; and providing resources. I am also certified in adult, infant and pediatric CPR and first aid through the American Heart Association.

Studies have shown that women who have a birth doula with them during labor and childbirth have shorter labors, are less likely to request pain medications, are less likely to have emergency cesarean sections and are more likely to be satisfied with their birth experience.

Studies have also shown that women who have social support during the postpartum period tend to have less postpartum depression, breastfeed for a longer duration and make a better adjustment to parenthood overall.
